Explorer Destroyer - The Firefox Referral Script that is setting out to Destroy IE

Surprisingly the first time I’ve seen an implementation of this kind. Explorer Destroyer, a very simple script to add to your website or blog that prompts users running Internet Explorer, with the following at the top of their screen:

It takes Firefox referrals to the next level. You include your appropriate AdSense ID, and for every user you switch to Firefox, you get that $1.00 referral bonus. Now, I along with just everyone else using a browser in this world, hate pop-ups, and although this doesn’t fall quite into this category, it comes very close, because the prompt at the top of the screen may not be the script you want to implement, take a look at the other options they have:

When you install the script on your site, you can decide how much force you want to use to convince your users to switch away from the dark side:

Level 1: Gentle Encouragement Rating: $$
Visitors using IE see a message encouraging them to download Firefox (with a download link) running across the top of the page.
Level 1 Demo >> (the demo will pretend you are using IE)

Level 2: Semi-serious Rating: $$$$
Visitors using IE get a friendly splash page encouraging them to download Firefox. There’s a download link, and a link to continue on to your site.
Level 2 Demo >> (the demo will pretend you are using IE)
Update: Xavier sent us this modified version of level 2 that will only show the splash page occasionally. Download it here and see a live demo here.

Level 3: Dead serious
Level 3 will not allow people using IE past a splash page. This level is very useful for sites that are not IE6 compatible. And there’s never been a more important moment to switch people to Firefox. Can you handle it? (At least try it for a day to see how good it feels.) Unfortunately, level 3 is a little too intense for the Adsense policies, so for this level you’ll have to use a regular, non-Adsense link to download Firefox.

I for one, don’t find this as intrusive as a pop-up ad, and the fact that the majority of people are still struggling with the very limited Internet Explorer, gives me merit to put this in, somewhere down the road.

Try it out… Explorer Destroyer - “Ready to get serious about switching users from Firefox to IE?”

I think ppl who don’t already have FireFox are usually not savvy computer users. And when you try and get them to switch to FireFox with a popup that says, “FireFox blocks popups”, it’s a bit counter intuitive.

And most people don’t understand how FireFox can stop viruses and spywhere either (which this kind of advertising technique looks a lot like).

I don’t disagree that a majority of the “Non-Savvy” users out there won’t understand what the hell that is, but for the select few whom have, it may just work to bait them.

I mean, even in my IT department, we have two of our users not using FF. The referral program definitely has worked in the past, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here either.

That’s a good point. And on that note-If someone in an IT department doesn’t at least have FF installed in their computer, they should be taken out to the back and be shot. (#);D
