SearchWith - After One Year Still Hands Down My Favorite Firefox Extension
Now that I’ve got a few readers, I’m going to re-introduce what I think is my most important Firefox Extension following my pre-req Foxmarks and Search Status. I originally wrote about this back in November but feel I didn’t get as much feedback as I was hoping for. I find when I’m searching certain topics, I like to jump around from various engine to engine, especially when you’re trying to find the best product prices, I like to search from eBay, to CDW, to Provantage to Amazon. This tends to be a bit annoying when you’re forced to type into the address bar each and every time, so something like the SearchWith Firefox Extension, is lifesaver. Here’s a SCREENSHOT.
to get started.
It allows you highlight any word, sentence or even paragraph and directly search with any of engines you want to add and know the search query. I order to add or modify available engines, go to TOOLS>EXTENSIONS>Right Click On SEARCHWITH>OPTIONS
Once there, you’ll find several services already listed by default. If the default services are to your liking, you MUST create an engine for the service.
Services

Engine

To add an engine, click on the Engine tab, type in a name for it and click “Add Engine”. This is where you must know the query code for the engine. Click here to get a list of query codes that I use for both this extension and my Firefox Quick Searches Here is a screenshot of adding the Digg engine:
Now we must add the service using the Digg engine, we’ve just created. Go back to services tab, type in a name for the service and click “Add Service”. You’ll get this below screenshot, where you’ll choose the appropriate engine, which we’ve just created:

That’s it! You then can re-adjust the order of how they’ll be listed in the context menu. It’s by far my #1 extension.

i have been using searchwith now for a while I think it’s great. When you highlight text on the context menu their is an option at the end of the menu called “all services”. In other words you can search all of the engines simultaneously. I think a great feature would be the ability to group engines together for example search only bookstores when searching for a book , etc.
