The Drobo - External Hard Drive Unit That Brings RAID To The Home
With data storage capacities still growing and hard drives still growing, the possibility of catastrophic data loss is still a possiblity when you’re working with one physical drive. Servers get away with this by what we know as RAID(Redundant Array of Independent Discs). Using several independent physical drives to create what looks to the server as one drive. This allows for drives to crash and/or be removed without any downtime. For the longest time, RAID was meant for business servers/power users. The days have changed, and with individuals needing incredible sizes for photography, video production and gaming, Data Robotics has come up with an incredibly simple device called the Drobo.
Here is how Data Robotics explains the Drobo themselves:
Fully automated storage that ensures data is always protected, your capacity is unlimited and requires no special computer knowledge or expertise.
The Drobo is an external storage unit that connects via USB and allows for quick addition and subtraction of up to four hard drives of any size or brand, giving you potentially terabytes of data. The only negatives are that the unit comes with NO hard drives on it’s own. So, you’re essentially paying $499 for an external storage casing with very powerful capability.

Drobo seems to be an interesting concept. But I don’t think people would be ready to spent 500 bucks for a personal storage. Still it would be worth for storing critical information.

Dude, what a great post. Do you think large companies are going to investing in a few of these, or is this more for a small home based business? Any case, I think there really cool and I’m going to look further into these things.

I would like to see support for IEEE 802.11n wifi connectivity so that this wonderful product can be used in home with wireless capabilities. As the future homes become wireless this feature would be really worth having in this product.

That’s one thing that it is missing, is any type of networking capability. For $500, you should see a lot more connectivity options.
