Top Wordpress Plugins by Type - Part 1 of 5: Administration
I’ve seen a lot of blog posts in various places in regards to Wordpress Plugins and most in regards to one certain topic. The problem is that they aren’t all organized to one certain post. I’m going to point you to the best Wordpress Plugins in each of the specific areas that are typically covered, administration, comments, forms, monetization, multimedia(Audio, Video, Images), posts and social networking. This way when you are starting up a fresh blog, you’ve got all of the plugins you really need on one single post. Each day this week, I will feature one or two of these particular areas. All of these will come together Friday, and I’ll have a complete list of the best of the best.
Please feel free to comment with your suggestions. I’ll add them accordingly.

Wordpress Administration Plugins: (ALL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Akismet: Far and away the most important plugin you can have to protect yourself against spam.
Wordpress Database Backup: The easiest backup solution for your Wordpress database. Newest version provides the ability to periodically backup, but you may also manually backup to your server, your computer or send to your e-mail. You may also add additional tables that you may be using for certain plugins that keep stats.
Permalink Redirect WordPress Plugin: “A WordPress plugin that replies a 301 permanent redirect, if requested URI is different from entry’s (or archive’s) permalink. It is used to ensure that there is only one URL associated with each blog entry.”
Time Zone WP Plugin: “This is a plugin for WordPress. It will automatically set the weblog time offset based on the time zone of the server, or using an explicit TZ value. The main purpose of this plugin is to allow automatic DST handling.”
Enforce www. Preference: - This plugin will enforce or not enforce the “www” on your permalinks. Some search engines may cut your backlinks in half thinking it’s two different locations.
WP-Cache: “WP-Cache is an extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database. WP-Cache allows to serve hundred of times more pages per second, and to reduce the response time from several tenths of seconds to less than a millisecond.”
Sig2Feed: Guarantees some type of link on every post of your RSS feed. This prevents thieve bloggers who steal your feeds to make their own posts on their blog.
WP Tiger Administration: “The current default WordPress administration area is functional, but I felt it could be improved. For several reasons, I didn’t want to touch the XHTML framework of the admin, but instead relied on the power of CSS2 to manipulate the presentation. The whole package has been wrapped up into a single plugin. Just install and activate. The new design will be immediately visible.”
Admin Drop Down Menu: “One thing I wanted to improve in the Admin area of my Wordpress blog was the header menu. I want to be able to reach any admin page in one click, instead of first clicking on the first level link (”Manage” for example) and then only on a submenu link (”Comments“)”
404 Notify: “This plugin will log 404 hits on your site and can notify you via e-mail or you can subscribe to the generated RSS feed of 404 event.”
Suggestions by Everton Blair of Connected Internet(Added 06/09/2007):
Folder Category List: This incredilby useful tool allows you create a simple list for your category, so that it doesn’t become cluttered with an annoying useless list with hundreds of categories
Spam Karma 2: According to Everton, “The best anti-spam plugin, which provides full control. Akismet is ok, but the inability to correct false positives makes it a no-go for me.”

I’ve been meaning to give my blog a workover too. Thanks as always for the heads up here, I’ll definitely add these to my list of plugins to ponder.

I also recommend Better Comments Manager to be a part of this, not because I developed it but because it is a real gem when you want to instantly connect with your readers using comments.
