WeFi - Helping The World Find Free Wireless Internet

As WIFI continues it’s widespread availability, more and more locations are taking advantage making a profit off of creating wireless hotspots. This becomes a pain for many of us just looking to jump on the web and check our e-mail or read our everyday news feeds. Although many of these hotspots you’ll have to pay up to as much as $25.00/hr, many airports, coffee shops and hotels provide “wireless web” for free, and that’s where the Web 2.0 site, called WeFi and it’s accompanying client are helping out.

WeFi is a user provided, free hotspot WiFi finder. Here’s the premise:

  • You login with a WeFi provided username and password.
  • Punch in your current location via city name or zip code.
  • Through Google Maps, all available hotspots that members have found will be populated on screen.
  • Additionally, you can download a an offline client to replace your current Windows Connection Manager. Through the beauty of their technology, they are able to establish your present location and list the availability of additional hotspots as well.
  • Members are then encouraged to input additional hotspots that they may find as well.
  • There are already many of these hotspot map locator’s on the web, but most only show major establishments, like a large airport or hotel chain. WeFi is open for any body’s input, similar to a Wiki, so many more “hole in the wall” locations, such as a small internet cafe or coffee shop can quickly be located. Unfortunately for many of us, WeFi is presently on what appears to be an extremely private beta, but we should hopefully expect it to open up within the next few months.

It seems like we’re still catching this little baby in it’s infancy because where I live, (around the nation’s capital), there just isn’t the coverage from the users that I’d like to see. Is that what “extremely private beta” means? Ha ha

Another great site for finding free WiFi enabled Internet hotspots is at Openwifispots.

from i’ve seen on their website, it looks like they went into public beta already. i downloaded their client, and it is a major improvement over the windows wireless interface. the maps are not yet extremely populated, but for a new site they have quite a lot of info, and it looks like all if it is uploaded by users, which is a very nice concept.

Wow, thanks for the info Genghis. I’m still trying to figure out where to sign-up if they really are out of public beta.
